Contact Lenses

Contact LensesDel Negro & Senft Eye Associates supplies the newest soft and rigid contact lens materials. Our optometrists, Dr. Lisa Martin Wiedeman and Dr. Tina Shah, take pride in providing the clinical knowledge necessary for proper fit.

Thanks to new materials and advancements in contact lens technology that provide greater comfort, safety, and ease in wearing, there are more options available:

  • Soft
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP or “hard”)
  • Daily wear
  • Extended wear
  • Disposable
  • Soft torics for astigmatism
  • Colored

A number of factors affect an individual’s ability to wear
contact lenses safely with minimal risk of infection or allergies.
Your eyes’ general health will be evaluated for:

  • Tear production
  • Eye shape
  • Blinking
  • Condition of eyelids
  • Specific prescription

Your general health and other factors will be assessed, taking into account:

  • Current medications
  • Motivation to wear contacts
  • Work environment
  • Past history with contacts
  • Ability to properly care for contacts

This complete evaluation enables Lisa Martin Wiedeman to select the most appropriate contact lenses for you.

We recommend an annual evaluation of your eye health to monitor for allergies, infections, dry eyes, and other medical eye problems.

Lens Care and Replacement

As a contact lens wearer, proper care and frequent changing of your contact lenses are essential to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

Because everyone’s eyes and vision needs are different, contact lenses are available with varying schedules for removal and replacement. All lenses, however, fall into one of two categories: DAILY WEAR or EXTENDED WEAR.

DAILY WEAR contact lenses should be removed every night before going to bed. At various intervals they are discarded and replaced with a new pair. Some daily wear lenses are discarded every day, while others are discarded after one or two weeks or longer. If these lenses are re-used, they must be cleaned and disinfected before they are worn again.

EXTENDED WEAR contact lenses can be worn overnight until the end of the wear schedule. Disposable extended-wear are discarded when removed. Others are cleaned, disinfected, and re-used before being replaced.

When you follow the replacement schedule your doctor has recommended, lenses are replaced before their performance is diminished by the buildup of deposits on the surface of the lens. Contact lens wearers often find it illogical to throw away lenses while their vision and comfort are still good. Complying with the replacement schedule is the best way to avoid complications and prevent future problems. Some of these problems can go unnoticed for a long time before symptoms appear.
